SmartyCam 3 Compatibility: Skoda Fabia R5

The Skoda Fabia R5 is a world-class rally car designed for professional and enthusiast racers. Known for its lightweight chassis, powerful turbocharged engine and advanced all-wheel-drive system, the Skoda Fabia R5 is a dominant force in competitive rally environments.

One of the key aspects that sets the Fabia apart is its ability to integrate with various data logging systems to further enhance performance and data analysis capabilities. As part of our Aim compatibility series, we will be exploring how each camera in our SmartyCam 3 range—Corsa, GP and Dual— is compatible with the Skoda Fabia R5 (2015 – 2018 and Rally2 EVO models from 2019), including connection types and how it can improve your car’s performance.

SmartyCam 3 Corsa Compatibility With Skoda Fabia R5

The SmartyCam 3 Corsa connects directly to the Skoda Fabia R5’s ECU through its CAN bus system. This integration allows the camera to overlay critical performance data—such as speed, RPM and gear position—directly onto HD video footage. Key features of the SmartyCam 3 Corsa include:

  • Plug & play installation: The cables and harnesses in the kit match the Fabia’s loom, eliminating the need for complex rewiring. This ensures quick and secure installation that won’t interfere with the car’s existing electronics.
  • Automatic start/stop: The camera automatically begins recording when the engine is turned on/off, ensuring no data is missed.
  • Easy mounting: Additional mounting solutions are available to mount the SmartyCam 3 Corsa to the Skoda Fabia R5, ensuring the camera’s field of view is clear and stable to capture the driver’s perspective.
  • Robust construction: Built to withstand the rigours of rally racing, including exposure to dust, vibrations and varying temperatures.
  • Telemetry integration: Overlays critical performance data directly over the footage, making it ideal for post-session analysis.
  • Race Studio 3 configuration: Ability to customise data channels, display overlays and track analysis configurations using RS3 software.

The Skoda Fabia R5 (2015 – 2018 and Rally2 EVO models from 2019) features a loom extension supplied by the car manufacturer, which has a DTM 4 pin connector on one end carrying CAN and power supply contacts.

For this installation, please refer to the following pinout of the “video camera communication loom” DTM 4 ways connector and connection table:

“Video Com loom” conn. pin Function Aim Cable

SmartyCam 3 GP Compatibility With Skoda Fabia R5

Equipped with a heavy-duty bullet camera, the SmartyCam 3 GP has been specifically designed to withstand extreme motorsport environments. By integrating directly to the Skoda Fabia R5’s ECU through its CAN system, the SmartyCam 3 GP can overlay critical performance data—such as speed, RPM and gear position—directly onto HD video footage in real time. Key features of the SmartyCam 3 GP include:

    • Automatic start/stop: The camera automatically begins recording when the engine is turned on/off, ensuring no data is missed.
    • Bullet camera design: With additional mounting solutions, the compact, external bullet camera can be mounted in tight spaces or outside the car if desired.
    • Robust construction: The global shutter CMOS sensor provides a distortion-free video, even under the high vibration and high speed rally conditions.
    • Plug & play installation: The cables and harnesses in the kit match the Fabia’s loom, eliminating the need for complex rewiring. This ensures quick and secure installation that won’t interfere with the car’s existing electronics.
    • Telemetry integration: Overlays critical performance data directly over the footage, making it ideal for post-session analysis.

SmartyCam 3 Dual Compatibility With Skoda Fabia R5

Much like the SmartyCam 3 GP, the bullet cameras are compact and can be mounted in various locations of the Fabia. However, the SmartyCam 3 Dual takes video analysis one step further by allowing drivers and teams to simultaneously record multiple viewpoints with two bullet cameras. Here are some of the SmartyCam 3 Dual’s key features that can enhance the Skoda Fabia R5’s data collection:

    • Automatic start/stop: The camera automatically begins recording when the engine is turned on/off, ensuring no data is missed.
    • Bullet camera design: With additional mounting solutions, the compact, external bullet camera can be mounted in tight spaces or outside the car if desired.
    • Dual perspectives: Capture views of both the road and the cockpit that synchronises with the car’s data for a comprehensive understanding of vehicle dynamics and driver actions.
    • Plug & play installation: The cables and harnesses in the kit match the Fabia’s loom, eliminating the need for complex rewiring. This ensures quick and secure installation that won’t interfere with the car’s existing electronics.
